Jumping for Joy

by Diane Porter

junco

No wonder juncos are such a cheery sight! They move so fast across the ground that it’s hard to see what’s happening with their feet. What they’re actually doing is bursting over the snow in a series of jumps, throwing both feet forward with each bound. You could never have the winter blues if you jumped for joy like that.

Take pleasure in watching the dark-eyed juncos for another few weeks. Soon they’ll disappear from Iowa, not to return until next winter. (Photo ©2012 Diane Porter)
