Bobolink: A Summer Grassland Visitorby Diane Porter
In the grassy field, half a dozen male bobolinks are singing like mad. They fly as they sing, and then they fly back and land where they started and sing some more. Clearly the purpose is pure display, to show the great white patches on their backs, and the buff puffball of a cap. To catch the ear of other bobolinks. I know the females hidden down in the grass are impressed. The human one is impressed also.
