Keelan Dimick Headlines KRUU ConcertKRUU FM Presents Jazz Extravaganza August 2 at Stephen Sondheim Center
Keelan Dimick, who grew up in Fairfield, Iowa, returns in August for KRUU FM's second benefit concert.Buoyed by the success of KRUU-FM’s Classical Gala benefit concert at the Stephen Sondheim Center for the Performing Arts, staff at the grassroots community radio station are busily planning the second concert of the series, a jazz extravaganza featuring 16-year-old piano phenom Keelan Dimick. The winner of two prestigious Lionel Hampton performance awards, with two impressive jazz recordings under his belt—“Life is a Song” and “Good Company”—Keelan grew up in Fairfield, and is the son of Michael and Lynda Dimick. He’s won awards at the Gene Harris Festival and the Heritage Jazz Festival, and has attended the world-famous Interlochen Jazz Camp. He’ll be traveling from his current home in Boise, Idaho, with two award-winning bandmates and his teacher to perform in Fairfield. “Keelan is simply amazing and can’t wait to jazz up the Sondheim Steinway,” says James Moore, station manager at KRUU FM. “He’s got magic fingers and a sophisticated, golden touch. He gets way inside the feel of the piano, is not afraid of space, turns standards into expressive playgrounds, and is the nicest person to boot. We love presenting concerts of extraordinarily talented artists, especially when they have a direct connection to our community. We really appreciate their generous support of 100.1 FM as well as that of The Iowa Source, co-sponsor of both events.” The Jazz Extravaganza will be in conjunction with the August 1st Friday’s Art Walk, which will be sponsored by KRUU. In keeping with the station’s Art Walk theme, “Imagine Community,” the artists have agreed to participate in a jazz workshop Saturday morning for local musicians and students. Come celebrate the community with a wonderful evening of extraordinary jazz music. Tickets will be available at the Sondheim box office, 472-2787. KRUU FM turns two years old in September and boasts more than 100 volunteer hosts producing more than 80 shows a week. KRUU is non-profit and derives its support from local listeners and underwriters. Listeners who appreciate the value of this vital community resource are encouraged to contribute $15 to 20 a month.
