In early spring 2008, I had the honor of playing the title character in My Town Pictures’ film Sister Patchouli, written and directed by Scott Thompson and filmed right here in Fairfield. Although the feature-length film is by no means a Hollywood blockbuster, it felt like we had a little slice of Hollywood in our hometown.
As the founder of My Town Pictures, Scott has produced more than 25 community films since 2004, winning numerous national Telly Awards as well as Iowa Motion Picture Association Awards of Excellence.
Sister Patchouli is about a woman whose parents dreamed of raising her as a “gift to the world.” Instead, she lives what she believes to be a failed life as an ordinary woman. Yet there is nothing ordinary about her or her life. While it is a fictional romantic comedy, not a documentary, the film manages to capture the spirit of Fairfield and what makes our town so unique.
I loved working with so many of my friends, colleagues, and fellow community members on this project. It was fun to see a different side of people and watch them bring each character to life in their own unique way. My character’s mother is played by the lovely Margaret Clair, whose character has some serious, heavy moments but for the most part is just hilarious. My sisters are played by Ali Sperry and Emily Pucell, both of whom I have worked with extensively at the Sondheim Center.
Many scenes were shot right on the square, in local parks, and in businesses like Kim’s Kottage, Crest Jewel, and Café Paradiso. You may even hear the familiar sound of the train, which interrupted filming during many a scene along with the sound of trucks on busy Highway 34.
Special thanks to community members such as Richard and Bonnie Thompson, who so graciously offered their homes for several scenes; Jay Mattsson, Cathy Wadsworth, and many others for generously volunteering their time to facilitate the production; and Sharon Bousquet, whose music adds a special touch to the film. The depth of talent here in Fairfield is reflected beautifully in this creative project.
Sister Patchouli is set to premiere in Fairfield in October, though rumor has it the date could be even sooner. Stay tuned for updates, and please come walk the red carpet with me!
