KRUU Jazz Gala with Keelan DimickBenefit Concernt for KRUU August 2, 2008One of Fairfield’s favorite sons will be returning to headline KRUU-FM’s Jazz Gala, the second in an ongoing series of benefit concerts for Fairfield’s grassroots radio station, which will be held at the Stephen Sondheim Center for the Performing Arts Saturday, August 2, at 8 p.m. Seventeen-year-old Keelan Dimick has been winning awards for years with his inspired piano playing, including a prestigious prize for performing from the Lionell Hampton Jazz Festival. Currently residing in Boise, Idaho, with his parents Lynda and Michael Dimick, he has released two CDs. “This kid is magic,” says KRUU station manager James Moore, who has had the joy of performing with him. “Aside from being one of the nicest people in the world, he has this kind of Michael Jordan/Tiger Woods natural talent that is deceptively simple on the surface but anchored to a fearless Miles Davis sense of space in the still waters of his soul. With a Mose Allison sparsity and a Ramsey Lewis richness of reach, Keelan is born to perform. I can’t wait to hear what he can do on the Sondheim Steinway piano!” When Keelan comes to Fairfield for the August 2 KRUU fundraiser, which is co-sponsored by The Iowa Source, he will be joined by fellow Boise mates Tom Jensen on acoustic bass, who also scored a performance prize at this year’s annual Hampton Festival; Damien Bard on drums; and his teacher, Justin Nielson, on piano. “These are the guys he has cut his albums with and who he has played with on numerous occasions,” says his dad. Talk about a slam dunk. And expect some surprise guests in the mix as well. What a great way to support the station that supports the community. KRUUFM, “The Voice of Fairfield, Iowa . . and Beyond,” is a pure citizens’ initiative, with 100 show hosts and deejays producing 80 programs a week. If you haven’t tuned in yet, check out for yourself why up to 3,000 visitors a day from all over the world are coming visiting www.kruufm.com.
