FROM THE CITY OF FAIRFIELD— October 17, 2011. In its bid to become a healthy Blue Zone, Fairfield leapt from 32nd place to 6th place in one week! Blue Zones are described as places where people live long, happy, healthy lives and are represented by cultures all over the world.

Governor Branstad has begun an initiative to make Iowa the “healthiest state in the nation” over the next four years. Currently Iowa ranks 19th. This bold initiative is being highlighted by a program to designate 10 Iowa Cities Blue Zones.

Thanks to a concerted effort led by Mayor Ed Malloy, The Jefferson County Wellness Coaltion, The Fairfield Park and Recreation Department and a group of concerned citizens, Fairfield is committed to improving the health of all of its citizens.

The town of 10,000 is fortunate to have so many opportunities to get fit and stay fit, with many parks, the loop trail, recreation center and pools, bikeway/walkway trail, tennis courts, baseball and soccer fields, fitness instructors, dietitians, yoga teachers, farmers market and Buy Fresh / Buy Local, Jefferson County Health Center, and The Raj.

To qualify for the program, Fairfield’s first step as a community is to demonstrate its passion for becoming one of Iowa’s healthiest cities. This is where Mayor Malloy stepped in to request citizens to go to www.bluezonesproject.com and click “I am a citizen” to register their support. And this is where thousands of citizens responded to catapult Fairfield from 32nd to 6th place.

"Fairfield citizens have responded well to the challenge, but our goal is to be the #1 city with the most committed citizens by October 28th, so please continue to spread the word and encourage everyone to register." If citizens haven’t done so, Mayor Malloy requests they register today and encourage everyone in their family, neighborhood, school, business, and church to register.
