MUM Literature Reunion Aug. 30-Sept. 2, 2013
You Will Literally Have a Great Time
by Sandra Willbanks
Reunion attendees will find many new buildngs along with all the familier sites on the MUM campus.
It’s been four decades in the making, but this Labor Day weekend, August 30–September 2, Maharishi University of Management’s literature majors are having their first reunion. Apparently, everyone has been too busy reading to return any sooner.
All MIU/MUM lit major alumni and friends are invited back to attend a variety of lectures, read, catch up on old times, take pictures, sit in on class discussions, attend workshops, and enjoy a campus that has radically changed over the years, as perhaps we ourselves have. Check out the Literature Reunion Facebook page for fun photos and interesting information.
Just think how being a student has changed over 40 years—from carrying a load of books to the dorm room to downloading books from the Internet. Even more books have been added to the vast bulk of what is considered literature worth studying, which is whatever our professors—Rhoda Orme-Johnson, Susan Anderson (Setzer), Bill Haney, et al—told us was important.
The one who hasn’t changed over the years is perennial teaching favorite Jim Karpen, who will be wandering around during the numerous events. A former MIU literature grad, Jim helped found the M.A. in Professional Writing in 1985 and directed it until 2003. He currently writes for MUM.
Current chair of the Literature Department is Dr. Terry Fairchild. His primary areas of interest are modern and contemporary literature, drama, and critical theory.
Dr. Rhoda Orme-Johnson is hosting the event, along with the alumni office and the current faculty of the MUM Literature Department. Rhoda was a founding faculty member at MIU and for years head of the Literature Department. She, along with Dr. Susan Andersen, recently edited The Flow of Consciousness: Maharishi Mahesh Yogi on Language and Literature, which is the first volume in a series covering Maharishi’s lectures.
That’s just a tiny hint of the greats who will be on campus.
Here's what's happening during the Lit Reunion Weekend.
Words of Wisdom
Remember, it’s Labor Day weekend, so start doing your sit-ups now and bring all your major credit cards and a wad of cash, because there are lots of things to do on campus and in Fairfield besides read. If you’re not an alum but love reading and writing, you’re invited, too. Everyone will literally have lots of fun!
For more information about the reunion, contact Anna Maria Cornell at the alumni office: 472-7000, ext. 3401, or amcornell @mum.edu.
