In an era dominated by expensive digital e-sports and “pay-to-win” card games, the Wanderer’s PDH League in Fairfield is proving that the best way to play is by using a format that’s accessible to everyone. Cofounded by Fairfield residents Ginger Persolus and Patrik Siljestam, the league has officially launched its second year as the largest U.S. program of its kind for Pauper Commander (PDH), a format within Magic: The Gathering.
The league operates out of Wanderer’s Haul, located at 206 S. Main St., across from the Fairfield Public Library. Unlike other formats that require expensive investments, PDH restricts players to using cards of “common” rarity—meaning no expensive Mythics or Rares. This restriction keeps the power level lower and the creativity higher, ensuring that strategy outshines budget.

“We want to encourage neighbors to sit down, share a meal, and play games without needing to spend large sums of money,” says Persolus. “Because we use common cards, the playing field is leveled. Some players who placed in the Top 10 of last year’s leaderboards were piloting decks that cost as little as $15.”
This unique approach caught national attention last year, drawing interest from PDH players across the country. Now the league invites the Fairfield community to join the action. Friday nights at Wanderer’s Haul feature Pauper Commander as the main event, while also offering a full menu—including pizza, hot tea, hot coffee, and homemade cookies. New-comers are welcomed with open arms and taught to play in relaxed groups of four.
While rooted in Fairfield, year two sees the launch of a new online platform designed to help local game stores across the country join the movement. As the home base for this nationally recognized league, Fairfield is leading the charge in connecting communities through friendly competition.
Participation is open to everyone. The league utilizes a flexible ELO rating system, meaning new players can join at any point before the end of the year without sacrificing their ability to place highly on the leaderboard. Players can register online at app.cpdh.guide.
The season features four mini-tournaments, with the next event scheduled for March 28. The league also hosts monthly deck-building contests with prizes for creativity. The league has a scaling $10,000 prize pool, with opportunities to win at each of the tournaments, and additional prizing to be earned through their battlepass and monthly deck-building contests.
Headquartered at Wanderer’s Haul in Fairfield, Iowa, the Wanderer’s PDH League is the premier organization for Pauper Commander gameplay. By prioritizing simple mechanics and social interaction over high-stakes costs, the league builds lasting connections among players.
