Fairfield Public Library will host the next installment of its Fix-It Friday series on Friday, April 17, from 6–8 p.m., welcoming community members to an evening devoted to textile repair, fiber crafts, and practical skills. The free event will take place after hours in the library’s main space, where the building will be transformed into a lively workshop environment filled with demonstrations, conversations, and hands-on learning.
This edition of Fix-It Friday will focus on simple techniques for repairing clothing, extending the life of fabrics, and mending. Attendees are encouraged to bring garments or textiles that need repair. Fairfield-area textile artists and repair specialists will offer presentations throughout the evening. Pam Ryerse of Sew Awesome Makerspace will demonstrate creative mending techniques that turn worn clothing into functional pieces, Robin Masciocchi of Singing Cedars will lead a finger-knitting activity for children, and Torrey Witherspoon will introduce participants to the traditional craft of darning, a technique for repairing socks and sweaters. Additional presenters will share their own knowledge and tips.
The evening will also include a special prize drawing for a sewing machine generously donated by the Fairfield ReStore.
Fix-It Friday is presented in collaboration with the Southeast Iowa Sierra Club and reflects a growing movement focused on repair and reuse. Organizers hope the event will encourage people of all ages to rediscover the satisfaction that comes from repairing and making things by hand. In a culture that often encourages disposal rather than repair, gatherings like this offer a reminder that many items can be restored with just a little knowledge and patience.
As Library Director, I see events like this as part of a broader role that public libraries can play in the years ahead. Libraries have always been places where knowledge is shared freely, but they can also serve as hubs where communities learn practical skills that strengthen self-reliance. By bringing together local artisans and curious learners, Fix-It Friday aims to revive practical skills while strengthening the social fabric of Fairfield.
