Abstraction/Realism, an exhibition featuring the work of Michael Rutherford and Bill Teeple, continues at ICON Gallery through April 11. The small non-representational abstract paintings by Rutherford are juxtaposed with Teeple’s small realistic landscapes. A reception and walk-through with the artists will take place on Friday, March 13, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
During the walk-through, Bill and Michael will bring the viewers into the intimate world that each of these paintings presents. Bill takes one to a poetic experience of the real world around us in Fairfield; Michael takes one deep into the world of color, form, texture, and space. Teeple captures the feelings and memories that the world evokes. Rutherford’s works awaken feelings and memories that form, colo,r and material evoke.
“These walk-throughs are one of the best ways to get inside a work of art,” says Teeple. “There is nothing more revealing of a work than to hear the artist talk about where it comes from and his experience of creating it.”
Rutherford states, “In some of my pieces I’m concentrating on the paint, concocting personal anecdotes in a visual conversation about painting itself. With others, I’m making a necessary departure, speaking in a supplementary, laid-back dialect of work. No matter which mode I work in, I’m always immersed in this visual vocabulary—searching, thinking, and making—in that order, over and over again.”
Bill Teeple is the founder and director of ICON Gallery and owner of Bill Teeple Fine Art Studio where he has taught and created art since 1998.
