World-renowned mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade, aka Flicka, returns to Fairfield in September for an encore performance and documentary premiere. Von Stade, who was inducted into the Opera America Hall of Fame in 2024, retired from full-time singing in 2010, so Iowans are very fortunate to have this opportunity to experience her world-class talent. The September 26 concert with her long-time accompanist James Meredith is dedicated to future generations of musicians, vocalists, and artists, and features composers ranging from Robert Schumann to Leonard Bernstein.
Since von Stade’s 2023 visit to Fairfield, a full-length documentary has been released that highlights her storied career and humanitarian work. Directed by Brian Staufenbiel and produced by Nicolle Foland, Flicka: A Love Letter will screen at the Fairfield Arts and Convention Center on Tuesday, September 15, 7:30 p.m.
The film covers her legendary life in opera, a magnificent career spanning five decades that began with her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1970 and includes over 57 operatic roles. Flicka: A Love Letter celebrates the artist’s life with archival footage and interviews and covers her altruistic efforts in bringing music to the unhoused and underserved in her community.
“We usually associate the term ‘diva’ with somebody who’s a little difficult and self-centered,” said Jim Meredith in a 2023 interview with The Iowa Source. “Flicka’s none of that. She loves people and she supports people—especially young people. And when she performs, she’s amazing.”
Von Stade has long been a champion of music education, and one of her biggest post-retirement passions has been the Young Musicians Choral Orchestra (YMCO). Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, it offers a powerful mix of musical training, academic support, and personal development.
“YMCO has been a glorious privilege, watching kids from 8 to 18 mature as musicians, students, and citizens and then go on to careers that they might never have imagined,” she says. “Being a part of this organization has been one of the most joyful experiences of my career and life!I am so grateful to the producers of the Flicka film that they came to YMCO and filmed our amazing students in action.”
