Kinky Boots Arrives at Hancher for a Rare Five-Show Run

Kinky Boots—playing at Hancher April 13-15—is an upbeat Broadway musical about transcending stereotypes, with a snappy score by Cyndi Lauper.

Broadway’s huge-hearted, high-heeled hit is coming to Iowa City! With music and lyrics by Grammy- and Tony-winning pop icon Cyndi Lauper, Kinky Boots is a joyous musical celebration about the unexpected friendships we discover—and the belief that you can change the world when you change your mind.

Inspired by true events, Kinky Boots takes you from a gentlemen’s shoe factory in Northampton to the glamorous catwalks of Milan. Having inherited a high-end men’s shoe factory from his father, Charlie Price forms an unlikely partnership with cabaret performer and drag queen Lola to produce a line of high-heeled boots in attempt to save his family’s business.

Based on the 2005 British film written by Geoff Deane and Tim Firth, the 2013 Broadway production of Kinky Boots earned 13 nominations and 6 Tony wins, including Best Musical and Best Score. In 2016, Kinky Boots also won three Laurence Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical.

“What we have, in ‘Kinky Boots,’ is a well-fitted, well-staged toe-tapper in the contemporary big-Broadway idiom. It’s never boring; it’s never shocking; you are likely to leave entirely entertained and satisfied. Can’t argue with that,” wrote Christopher Bonanos in New York Magazine.
